You alone know that I am a monster
The secret word for what I am: a monster
Even as I dinge and scrape and moan
In some edge-laundromat, I am a monster
Even as I pray to mountain night
I gear for sea-combat, I am a monster
Even as I meekly stand and wait
Clutch to my breast my hat, I am a monster
Even as I smokeweave coffeehouse
Around where you once sat, I am a monster
Even as I drink the subway down
And dwell among the rats, I am a monster
Like the rats I live to eat and purge
To wake, to sleep, grow fat, I am a monster
I try to say that you are beautiful
My gut makes it sound flat; I am a monster
I try to keep my tongue

and never even gave her the chance to be defined.
That’s why this girl created such a drastic escape,
for she was willing to become Merandah and leave Gianna behind.
